Middle School Curriculum Overview

Middle School Classes
Beginning in the sixth grade, students at Horace Mann School begin attending school in a departmentalized program, going to seven class periods each day, each taught by a different teacher. Course requirements are as follows.

Sixth Grade
  • Two periods of Language Arts
  • One period of Mathematics
  • One period of Social Science (World History - Dawn of Humans through Ancient Rome)
  • One period of Science (Earth Science)
  • One period of Physical Education
  • One period of an elective class

Seventh Grade
  • One period of Language Arts
  • One period of Mathematics
  • One period of Social Science (World History - Fall of Rome through the Enlightenment)
  • One period of Science (Life Science)
  • One period of Physical Education
  • Two periods of elective classes*

Eighth Grade
  • One period of Language Arts
  • One period of Mathematics
  • One period of Social Science (U.S. History - Colonial History through the Civil War)
  • One period of Science (Physical Science)
  • One period of Physical Education
  • Two periods of elective classes*

*In the seventh and eighth grades, as part of their elective program requirements, students are required to take at least one year of foreign language (with an option for a second year; successful completion of two full years of middle school foreign language results in placement in second year high school foreign language in the 9th grade) along with at least one semester of a visual or performing art.
