This year at Horace Mann, we continue teaching character education by partnering with Harper for Kids, a children’s nonprofit organization founded by Peanut Louie Harper and Tim Harper. Their Youth Character Development Program is based upon legendary UCLA Coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success. The program teaches life skills through Wooden’s Pyramid of Success and his children’s book, Inch and Miles: The Journey to Success, co-written by Peanut Harper.
Coach Wooden’s style was not about winning; it was about giving 100% effort, doing your personal best. To help our students at Horace Mann School reach their greatest potential, they will be learning about Coach Wooden’s “Pyramid of Success”. We will focus on certain character traits in the throughout the school year.
September: Hard Work and Enthusiasm
October: Friendship and Loyalty
December: Self-Control and Determination
January: Alertness and Action
February: Fitness and Skill
March: Team Spirit
April: Poise and Confidence
May: Personal Best
With parents help, through conversations at home, in the car, at the dinner table, before they go to bed at night, we hope to teach each Horace Mann student the value of giving their personal best every day at school and at home.
