Welcome to 7th and 8th Grade English

Welcome to Horace Mann English Department. Our goal this year is to increase our students' reading comprehension, critical thinking, and writing and editing skills. In addition to the B.H. U. S. D. curriculum, outside reading is very important for our students. Reading not only develops comprehension and vocabulary, but also builds a positive attitude toward reading for personal enjoyment. Toward this end students should select a book that is high interest and challenging, but not to difficult to understand. To help encourage outside reading, I will give credit for this each week. The Outside Reading Log you will sign each week indicates that your child has read in their outside reading book at least twenty minutes for at least five days out of the week. While I do not expect you to sit and watch them read every night, this is a good tool to encourage your child to read more. I will check the log each Monday and give credit for each signed sheet. In addition, we will do a book report every four or five weeks on our outside reading books. Thank you for encouraging reading!

To help you check on your child's homework, they should write down their homework each day on their Homework Assignment Sheet. This may be in their agenda or personal calender or on the first page in the homework section in their notebook, but it should be in same place every day. Usually we will have homework on school nights and when it is finished it should be in their homework section of their English notebook if you would like to check it.

Thank you for your interest in our English program.
