Hello and welcome to this new year! I am so excited to be teaching 6th grade science and STEM and to be joining the Horace Mann team. I look forward to getting to know each and every one of my students and their families throughout this year. To get us started on getting to know one another, I wanted to tell you a little bit about myself.
I grew up in Southern Orange County. I received my Bachelor's of Science in marine biology from UC Santa Cruz in 2012. After receiving my bachelor's, I worked at CIMI (Catalina Island Marine Institute) for 2 years teaching students from 5th through 12th grade about the ocean while also having the opportunity to take them snorkeling and use a more hands-on approach to help educate them. After CIMI, I moved up to the Bay Area where I worked at MSI (the Marine Science Institute), which gave me the opportunity to take students out on a research vessel to study the San Francisco Bay and its wildlife. While working at MSI, I decided I wanted to become a classroom teacher and to bring my experiences of hands-on learning into my class. I went to Cal State Long Beach and received my science teaching credential in June 2017!
I truly believe that hands-on learning is the best way to learn science and I think that the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and STEM offer great opportunities for hands-on learning.
