Who am I?

A little bit about me...

I have worked in the education field for over 25 years.  I have worked in Beverly Hills for over 15 years.  The most important thing is that I LOVE the work I do.

I am the child of immigrants.  My parents came to the United States from Jamaica in search of better economic opportunities for themselves and their children.  My father's side of the family has roots in China.  I was born and raised in Culver City.  I hope that you come to love this part of the world as I do.

I consider myself fortunate to teach your children.  I am passionate about teaching children and seeing them grow academically.  I am lucky enough to be able to teach exactly what students need when they need it.  I am also lucky enough to have students from all over the world in my classroom.  We talk about our experiences, our perspectives, and our cultures.  I learn as much from them as they learn from me.  When I am not working, I love to spend time in the outdoors, travel, hike and read.  I have one lucky daughter.

I love languages.  I love the way languages sound and I love to hear all of the languages that are in my class.  I learned Spanish in high school and earned a degree in Spanish Literature in Spanish in college.  I have recently enrolled into a Korean language program.  I believe it is important for me to stay connected with my students and understand their learning journey.  So, not only am I learning the language that some of my students speak, but I am keenly aware of how difficult it is to learn a new language, new sounds, new grammar and new vocabulary.  I hope my experiences make me a better teacher.

In some countries, the relationship between teacher and parent is very formal.  Please follow the tradition that makes you most comfortable.  Some parents are more comfortable with a more familiar relationship.  I do not mind if you address me by my first name, Cherryne (pronounced share-een or shir-een) or my my last name (Ms. Lue-Sang).
Cherryne is always learning something new...

I consider myself to be a lifelong learner and I want to always present myself as the best teacher I can be.  During the 2021 - 2022 academic year I participated in a year long professional learning experience that reviewed all of the elements of teaching reading and language.  The goal was to help us be able to create learning foundations that position students for success later as well as identify and recognize areas of struggle and provide support for that.

During the 2022 - 2023 academic year, I will participate in a year long professional learning experience that will help me create more learning experiences that integrate different elements of technology into my instruction.  So far I have learned about various apps, new instructional strategies as well as the importance of encouraging students to tell their own stories.  I am looking forward to increasing the students' usage of design and demonstrating learning with the Adobe suite of apps, Flip, and Book Creator.  I am learning how to use virtual tools to enhance students' learning experiences by increasing the cognitive rigor of tasks and assignments.  Technology also allows me to create more open ended tasks that allow for personal creativity which is another level of rigor.  I am looking forward to continuing this work for the 2022-2023 academic year.
